ALFEW wraps-up continuous shows at the The Grange

After eighteen shows, spanning six years, ALFEW will no longer be curating art shows at Heritage Mississauga's The Grange House.

It was a great experience, giving us the opportunity to meet many wonderful artists, but unfortunately organizing such shows takes up too much time for one person to undertake. Also, while we were grateful for the opportunity to display our work at The Grange, the hours were somewhat restrictive and frequently prevented people from readily accessing the work.

The last show (presently running) is Aggregation 18: a solo show with photographer Dave Hook, which opened on July 28 and runs until October 2015.

Matthew Wilkinson, Historian at Heritage Mississauga, has graciously invited us to hold a show from time to time in the upstairs space, which we will be pleased to do.

At some point, we may consider holding a show at The Neilson Park Creative Centre, in Etobicoke.

"Aggregation 15" - "Memory Lane"

July 8th to October 3rd, 2014 at The Grange

Aggregation 15 teaser

Art can be a tool for sharing, exploring and expressing memory.

2014 marks the centennial of the start of the First World War, and Heritage Mississauga will be focusing many of its programs on the theme of remembering and remembrance of historic Mississauga's involvement.

In connecting to the theme of remembrance and memory, Heritage Mississauga is inviting the collective ALFEW artists to artistically explore the concept of remembrance and memory in ALFEW's Aggregation 15 art exhibit at The Grange, running from July 8th to October 3rd, 2014 (Art drop off is June 24th).

The challenge is to use your art, in any medium, to explore the concept of memory. What inspires you to remember? What stirs your memory from a specific place, event, emotion or story? What and why should we collectively remember or share something? Some memories are shared, some are intensely personal.

Representational or abstract, regardless of style or inspiration or theme, any memory-inspired-art is welcome. We invite ALFEW artists to also provide a short narrative (50 words or less) describing your memory-inspired-artworks.

Heads-up: Summer Themed Show - Remembrance

Our summer show for 2014 will be themed around remembrance and the 100th anniversary of WWI.

There is currently very little scheduled on the topic of the 100th Anniversary of the First World War, and an art exhibit themed on remembrance would, in my opinion, be quite a draw. For artistic inspiration, artists might look to the styles of Frederick Varley, A.Y. Jackson and Arthur Lismer, members of the Group of Seven. They were all employed as war artists during the First World War. Other Canadian artists employed as war artists during WWI included Maurice Cullen, Kenneth Forbes & C.W. Jefferys, amongst likely many others. Here is an interesting link ...

Artists are free to interpret this theme as they wish. They could use Remembrance as the main force, which could include a wide variety of subjects, since Remembrance is different for everyone. Or they could hone in on WW1 or any war they had relative's in or which had an impact on their lives.

Art lists and .jpgs must be submitted by June 9/14 and accepted Art is to be dropped off June 24/14.

Spring 2013 Updates

The Fall show at the Grange has been held over until the end of February 2013 to accommodate some renovations. The walls have been repaired and repainted in honour of the new and updated picture hanging system. This will make hanging the shows a lot easier.

We look forward to a new show -- Spring themed -- for March, April and May. We will put out a call for art in February, but you are all forewarned: Spring is the theme, so artists, get those paintbrushes going. Photographers, look through your work and find some spring themed photos you can print and frame.

Postmodern Pinups - Bruce Walker

ALFEW artist Bruce Walker has mounted a cozy exhibit of what he calls Postmodern Pinups in the Junction, and it will be there for all of May. Opening reception is Wednesday May 9th.

The Next Contest

"The Grange in June" was the first contest in a series we have called "Capturing Mississauga's Heritage". The next contest -- which will reach its conclusion summer 2012 -- begins immediately.

We will be celebrating the 175th anniversary of the (failed) rebellion of 1837, led by William Lyon McKenzie. Our contest involves the Mississauga portion of McKenzie's flight following his defeat at the Battle of Montgomery's Tavern.

Contestants are provided with a map detailing the various points which McKenzie passed, and the location where he actually stayed for 3 nights (and was almost captured).

You will be free to take pictures, paint, draw or carve your interpretation of whichever point or location you choose, and during whichever month you choose, starting right now: August.

Final date for finished art to be delivered in 2012 will be announced shortly.

Thanks to everyone

ALFEW wishes to extend its thanks to everyone involved in the Aggregation 5 art show.

First, to our friends at Heritage Mississauga for allowing us to use their space for our shows, and for organizing a lovely opening night reception, and for taking all those nice pictures!

Then to all the artists who contributed their artwork to the show and for coming out to the opening night.

The participation of the artists is a vital part of our shows, and will help to build the momentum we need to make this really big.

We were also delighted at the interest shown by the artists in our contest to capture a likeness of The Grange either in photo, or some other art form.

We are looking forward to seeing the results. Don't forget - if you haven't filled out a contest form yet, we can email you one, and that you need to get your contest entry started during the month of June, to be completed and handed in to The Grange no later than July 15.

Our Artists Galleries and Windows Internet Explorer

I was able to fix a bug that was causing the Artist's galleries to malfunction for some users of Internet Explorer in MS Windows. The art galleries should work properly for anyone viewing us in IE7 or IE8, and I assume also IE9.

Sadly, you still can't view the galleries in IE6, but I strongly urge you to upgrade to IE8 rather than continue struggling with IE6 anyway.

Gallery updates

If you are browsing with IE7 or IE8 the picture galleries may be working for you. I'd love to hear reports about that either way—thanks!

I have sped up the gallery workings enormously, so if it was very sluggish for you before, please give them another try. Things will be much improved for those of you with slower connections to the web.

Champagne Time

Well, the new http://www.alfew.com site is launched, and in fact it's almost ready. What's that you say? Oh yes, that's usually done the other way around, but I couldn't wait to just open 'er up and see what she'll do.

I'm happy to get any comments, gripes, kudos and/or bug-reports that you might have about the site. Feel free to drop me a line at bruce.walker@gmail.com. Thanks!

IE users: My Apologies

I'm very sorry that the image gallery feature that appears on every artist's page does not appear to be working correctly for Internet Explorer. (That's the web browser that many Microsoft Windows users view the web through.) I'm attempting to get that fixed as soon as I can, but I'm using free Open Source software (Galleria) for that function and getting that stuff serviced is iffy at best.

In the meantime you could give Firefox a try, or Google Chrome or Apple's Safari ; all very fine browsers.
